I replaced to old 10 hp flat head with a 17 HP OHV Briggs single. This rider was made before MTD started using the vari-drive pulley set-up with the forward/reverse gear box. I have another one I built from a old MTD Built Ward rider. The engine is a Kohler Command CV12.5 still governed. What you an not see is I sectioned the rear of the deck to mount the battery. You can see from the picture I have removed the U shaped seat spring/mount assembly to lower the center of gravity. He shifted to fifth going through turn one and either when he stood on it coming out of turn four on that lap or the next lap, he pulled the front wheels off the track. One time when my friend Rick was racing it, I could tell from the sound of the trans he was only running in fourth. I also installed four additional spider gears on the bull gear. When I modified the transmission, the replaced both of the sleeve type axle bearing with sealed self-aligning bearings. I built the Snapper for a friend of mine. They have a trailer park with some black top where they run it.
He has another son in Wyoming that when he come to visit, HE HAS TO DRIVE THE SNAPPER. They will not drive it after the first run because they are afraid of it. His son and a employee of his used riding lawn mower to get around. He has a very larger yard around his truck shop.
This is even with the seat lowered by removing the U shaped seat spring/mount. You have to watch it or it WILL do a wheelie when you take off. It will run about 30 MPH with the engine running a governed 3600 RPM. I even have a Snapper that I modified for law mower racing. The rectangular type of the even later models are not that bad. I HATE the bicycle type handle bars that the later Snappers used. Most people around hear when those handle bars were use turned them around from how they came from the factory. The tube type handle bars are the best for the steering. I might be able to give you a idea of when it may have been built. This engine is about the sixth engine it has had on it. We put a new deck on it about 3 years ago.
My Father-in-Law has one he bought in 1973. The other have been built in various forms for decades. The Real OLD Snappers are the ones with the individual brakes on the rear wheels.
